A Guide to Holistic Esthetics

I’m sure you’ve heard of holistic estheticians, but what exactly does this entail? The holistic esthetician views the body as one unit with various intertwining systems, and they apply this knowledge to how they treat the integument. Focusing on only the skin is what I consider a band-aid approach - we are not getting to the root cause of why you are struggling with acne, hyperpigmentation or skin laxity.

We need to get to the bottom of why your skin is misbehaving. We know the characteristics of healthy skin - bouncy, free of discoloration and textural irregularities, and slightly acidic. If we are lucky enough, these characteristics will be present due to genetics. If we aren’t so lucky, our genetics can make us more susceptible to environmental stressors. The cellular damage that builds up from this will manifest as skin conditions over time.

Taking a holistic approach means much more than using products at home and getting treatments from your esthetician. It means taking an anti-inflammatory approach in your lifestyle. Look at all of the factors we need: are you getting adequate, comfortable sleep? Are you eating all the proper nutrients and taking in the correct amount of water? How is your  physical, emotional and mental well-being? These are all things to consider when making lifestyle changes to benefit your skin health, and your esthetician should discuss these things with you to make a real difference in your skin.
